Woolenwick Junior School

Handwriting

Handwriting overview

Handwriting which is clear and legible is fundamental in the curriculum because it's the foundation for communicating ideas and helps to develop good pupil self-esteem.

At Woolenwick Junior School, the aim of our handwriting curriculum is to ensure that each pupil develops the skills, confidence and independence they need. We aim to ensure our pupils learn to write with fluency, clarity and  speed in order to communicate effectively.

We have chosen to base our handwriting curriculum on the ‘write well’ system published by Schofield and Sims. Each session, supports children to build the skills they need to sit with the correct position, orientation, letter formation and a fluent cursive style.  Teachers have the flexibility to adapt the materials and approaches to suit the needs of their pupils.

We are mindful to support children in sitting correctly and in holding a pen/pencil correctly in order to have the correct position and orientation.
