Interventions

At the Woolenwick Schools, we place high value and importance on our intervention provision. At the heart of our intervention provision is a commitment to ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education and the support they need to succeed. We recognise that children learn at different rates and may need additional help to secure key skills and knowledge. Through targeted catch-up programmes and personalised support, we help pupils build strong foundations, develop confidence in their abilities, and overcome barriers to learning.

Our approach focuses on strengthening the fundamental building blocks of education first, enabling children to progress with confidence and independence. By nurturing self-belief, celebrating success, and providing the right support at the right time, we empower every child to reach their fullest potential and thrive both academically and personally.

Our interventions are delivered by our highly-skilled support staff team, who regularly have training by external and internal staff.

The interventions we offer are:

Numberstacks

Number Stacks is a whole-school intervention to help address gaps in understanding for pupils in all primary year groups. With its Initial Assessments and Fluency Activities at the end of each video tutorial, it is easy to evidence progress as pupils work their way through the Key Skills.

  • A clear maths support programme with easy to follow, staged activities moving from concrete resources to mental and written methods of calculation
  • Covers over 69 Key Skills from EYFS to Year 6
  • Video tutorials explain and demonstrate activities so no complicated instructions to read and saves teachers having to plan and explain activities to supporting adults
  • Everything required is in the Resource Kit so no time wasted gathering equipment
  • Initial Assessments to identify gaps in learning, combined with Fluency Activities at the end of each video, can be used to evidence progress
  • Over 50 practical game ideas to help consolidate learning

The Code

The code is a early phonic intervention best suited to pupils who have significant weakness in reading and sounding out phonemes of words.

This validated Letters and Sounds programme teaches the skills of blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. It progresses through all sounds, working from the simple to the more complex. By following the progression, children build on their growing phonic knowledge. They quickly learn to read and spell, having fun along the way.

Forward with Phonics

Forward with Phonics is our Phase 3 to 5 phonics intervention for children from Year 2 upwards who have not made progress despite catch up using the school’s systematic synthetic phonics programme. The step-by-step lesson plan can also be used with resources from the school’s programme. This is one of the interventions recommended on our recent well received Persistent Literacy Difficulties course.

It is a highly structured intervention (one to one or very small group) which makes explicit the vital link between oral blending and segmenting and word reading and spelling. It uses a hands on approach, super high levels of modelling and fun visual resources to engage children and secure progress.

Reading Fluency

The Reading Fluency intervention is designed to support struggling readers in Key Stage 2 make swift and dramatic gains in their reading attainment. Through the combined use of evidence-informed reading strategies and high-quality texts, this intervention not only increases the number of pupils achieving the Expected Standard in reading at the end of Key Stage 2, but fosters enthusiastic, confident readers who show increased pleasure and skill when reading challenging texts across the curriculum.

The Write Path

Our Writing Intervention programme is a bespoke provision, carefully designed and developed by our school to meet the needs of our pupils. Supporting early and emerging writers from Reception through to Year 5, the programme helps children develop the essential skills needed to become confident and successful writers.

Through carefully planned, targeted support, pupils strengthen their handwriting, sentence construction, grammar, and punctuation skills, building secure foundations for future learning. Using approaches such as Colourful Semantics, children are guided to understand sentence structure, expand their vocabulary, and communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.

Intervention sessions are tailored to individual needs, ensuring that pupils can revisit and secure key concepts, close gaps in learning, and develop confidence in their writing abilities. By focusing on the fundamental building blocks of writing, we empower children to make meaningful progress, express themselves with increasing independence, and reach their full potential as writers.

We use a similar structure to our other interventions which highlights revising, practising and applying the chosen skill.

SEN TA interventions

At the Woolenwick schools, our SEN TA delivers interventions to children with special educational needs. These interventions are based on social, emotional and mental health and can include:
