Reading
Reading subject overview
Reading is crucial in the curriculum because it's the foundation for academic success, critical thinking, and personal growth. It has the power to unlock knowledge, expand horizons, and foster empathy.
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free," said Frederick Douglass.
At Woolenwick Junior School, the aim of our reading education curriculum is to ensure that each pupil develops the enjoyment, skills, knowledge, confidence and independence they need. We aim to ensure our pupils learn to read with fluency, expression and comprehension.
We have chosen to base our reading curriculum on the Jane Considine ‘Hooked on books’ approach, which, in each session, supports children to access age-appropriate texts. Each year group has its own ‘reading spine’. The use of this approach gives us a basis, but not the entirety of a comprehensive, carefully thought-through curriculum that includes consistency, progression, diversity and cross curricular links embedded into it. However, we encourage teachers to use their own professional judgements and they have the flexibility to adapt the materials and approaches to suit the needs of their pupils.
