Woolenwick Junior School

Writing

At Woolenwick Schools, we believe that every child can become a confident, capable writer. Our writing curriculum is built on a clear progression that develops pupils’ knowledge, skills and creativity from Nursery through to Year 6.

Children are taught a carefully sequenced range of text types, enabling them to understand the purpose, audience and structure of different forms of writing. Alongside this, they develop increasingly sophisticated sentence construction, grammar and punctuation skills, ensuring they can communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.

Vocabulary development is at the heart of our curriculum. Through rich, high-quality texts and purposeful learning experiences, pupils are introduced to ambitious language and taught how to select words that engage, inform and inspire their readers.

Our progressive approach ensures that knowledge and skills are revisited, practised and built upon year after year, allowing every child to grow as an independent and successful writer. By the time they leave Woolenwick, pupils have the confidence, creativity and technical expertise needed to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences.

"Learning to write, writing to learn, and writing to make a difference."
