Woolenwick Junior School

History

History subject overview

At the Woolenwick Schools, we believe that history may only be relevant to some children in the concepts of their own lives and experiences.  Others may have been exposed to the different stories of other generations within their own families and others may have visited museums, historical sites and workshops from an early age and been enriched by these experiences.  Regardless of each individual child’s starting point, our school’s curriculum intent is to equip children with historical knowledge and skills that will allow them to have more of an understanding about the world around them and provide them with a thirst to find out more.

At Woolenwick, pupils have a chronological understanding of the time line that has come before their lifetime.  Our History curriculum is bespoke, with teachers delivering lessons that answer a single learning question each time, linked to an overall period for that term. In order to aid the concept of chronology, our Year Three pupils start at the beginning of the British history timeline, by learning about prehistoric Britain and our Year Six children finish their journey by recapping periods learnt from here in their about Crime and punishment in Britain throughout the ages, making continuous connections to their modern day lives and the development of British Values through-out history.

With British Values, in mind and the skills to compare and contrast across not only British history but also that of ancient civilizations that are interwoven throughout our curriculum, pupils at the Woolenwick Schools leave Key Stage Two with a rich knowledge of how civilization and the modern world came to be influenced by what has already been.

Using the Subsequent knowledge strands (below) at the beginning of each lesson, our pupils are able to explain the significance of these within our lessons and communicate their ideas effectively, using higher level vocabulary.
